How the Film Industry Can Drive Growth in Happy Valley

Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending an inspiring presentation by Pennsylvania Film Commissioner Gino Pesi, hosted by The Happy Valley Adventure Bureau (HVAB) at Wyndham Garden State College. The discussion highlighted the film industry’s transformative potential for Pennsylvania’s economy, with 50 approved projects projected to inject an incredible $1.28 billion into the state. This vision is rooted in innovative approaches to funding that prioritize sustainability for the arts.

Why Should You Care if You’re Not a Filmmaker?
It’s easy to assume the film industry has little relevance to non-creatives, but consider this: content creation, even at a local level, can bring significant benefits to Happy Valley businesses. A single video showcasing a local attraction can generate weekend visitors, who, in turn, spend money at neighboring businesses, restaurants, and tourist sites. It’s about collaboration, not competition.

If you’re a business owner, the power of storytelling can amplify your reach. Instead of relying solely on static images or product shots, capture the essence of your location, share the vibe of your environment, and tell the story of your community. This narrative approach resonates far more deeply with potential customers.

Resources for Content Creation
Don’t know where to start? HVAB offers a section on their website featuring local professionals who can help bring your vision to life. Visit Happy Valley Adventure Bureau for information on local video production teams and creative resources.

Building Happy Valley’s Film Industry
HVAB and the Happy Valley Sports & Entertainment Alliance are developing a strategic plan to attract more film projects to the area. This roadmap includes potential incentives, location scouting, logistical support, and partnerships with stakeholders to create a sustainable film production ecosystem. This effort is part of Pennsylvania’s broader goal to compete for a larger share of film, television, and commercial productions.

Collaboration in Action
During the event, I had the opportunity to reconnect with talented local creatives like Corey Beasley, Michael DePiro, and Pearl Gluck, whose contributions are helping to elevate Happy Valley’s profile. A special shoutout to Pablo Lopez, our dedicated local Film Commissioner, for championing the local creative scene, and to Fritz Smith at HVAB for their ongoing support of initiatives that showcase the region’s potential.

As Commissioner Pesi’s presentation demonstrated, the film industry isn’t just about big studios; it’s about creating opportunities and economic growth for local communities. Whether you’re a filmmaker, business owner, or creative, now is the time to join the movement to shine a spotlight on Happy Valley.

Let’s put Happy Valley on the map, one story at a time.
